Full Circle Artist Statement

Like most artists, I tend to work in series.  Most of my work is influenced by nature and my deep concern for the environment.  I wanted to try a new format for the paintings in this exhibit, so instead of the long horizontal works I had been doing, I decided to use a circular format.  The combination of the nature themes and the round format made me start seeing the paintings as views through a microscope, telescope, or binoculars.  I was drawn to the irony of painting something large as a constellation on a small canvas, and then painting a butterfly wing or flower petal on a large one.  This upsetting of micro/macro equilibrium lead me to display the paintings as if they were bouncing around the gallery - like a world gone mad.
